With over 1000 educational performances under its belt, Brass 5
definitely knows how to reach young audiences! The ensemble
develops and presents a new educational program each year for the
K-12th grade levels. Utilizing the public school teaching experience
of its members, Brass 5 relates the material to the specific grade
level's curriculum in a fun format that has become the ensemble's
educational signature. Plus, the programs can be utilized by the
music teachers in the classroom.
More
than 275,000 students have experienced
the fun and
learning
of a Brass 5 program!

Past educational programs have included:
"From Bones to Brass," a humorous look
at the develoment of the family of brass instruments,
"Elements of Motion," an interdisciplinary
approach that demonstrates how musical compositions are created,
"Nation Emblem," a historial journey through
American music and culture, and
"Why Music," a program that explores the
everyday use of music in our lives.
"An American Dream," an exploration of
significant historical times and important figures in American
history linking the past and present thru music. This SOL based
program is cloaked in laughter and humor.
"Roots" is an exploration of jazz from
the negro spiritual to rock and roll. Brass 5 will use the conversation
of music to explore the beginnings of America's own music form,
Jazz.
" Caravan" is the same style program
as "Roots" geared for middle school.
The latest from Brass 5:
Brass 5 now offers a special Science & Sound Unit based
on Virginia 5th grade Science SOLs. In this 90 minute in-class
program, two members of the Brass 5 team talk about and explore
the elements and characteristics of sound and sound energy. We
present new vocabulary and concepts of the elements of sound,
promoting a general understanding with practical applications.
We will actually show first hand how an oscilloscope and decibel
meter work as they are not usually available to classrooms. We
also use a variety of materials to demonstrate the properties
of sound that we have discussed. We will actually make an instrument
from each of the four families of instruments to show how the
physical properties of the materials work in conjunction with
the basic characteristics of sound. Some of the vocabulary and
concepts covered are: energy, sound wave, amplitude, wave length,
decibel, frequency and oscilloscope.
